d. 194 BC; Alexandria

Eratosthenes of Cyrene was a Greek mathematician, poet, athlete, geographer, astronomer and historian. He studied and worked at Alexandria, the capitol of Hellenized Ptolemaic Egypt, becoming the second librarian of the famed Alexandrian Library.

Eratosthenes created a map of the world based on the available geographical knowledge, is the first known person to have calculated the circumference of the Earth, and devised a system of latitude and longitude.

Euclid's Elements is one of the oldest treatises on mathematics and is considered the most influential textbook ever written, being instrumental in the development of logic and modern science.

Euclid quotes ~
• “And the whole [is] greater than the part.”
• “A prime number is one (which is) measured by a unit alone.”

Leonhard Euler
b. 4-15-1707; Basel, Switzerland
d. 9-18-1783; St. Petersburg, Russia

Mathematician and physicist Leonhard Euler made important discoveries in fields as diverse as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory.

He introduced much of the modern mathematical terminology and notation, particularly for mathematical analysis, such as the notion of a mathematical function.

Euler's father Paul was a friend of Johann Bernoulli and young Leonhard took lessons with him.

Leohard Euler quotes ~
• “Mathematicians have tried in vain to this day to discover some order in the sequence of prime numbers, and we have reason to believe that it is a mystery into which the human mind will never penetrate.”
