The Yangtze in China, the longest river in Asia, has seen human activity in the Three Gorges area as far back as 27,000 years ago.

The Yangtze experiences major flooding and is very polluted.

Shanghai, the most populous city in China, sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Other cities on the Yangtze are Chongqing, Wuhan, and Nanjing.

China's Yellow River, the 6th longest river in Asia, is called the “the cradle of Chinese civilization”. The Yellow River has frequent devastating flooding, and has earned the name “China's Sorrow”.

The Yellow River rises in western China and flows into the Boha Sea.

Yenisei (also Yenisey)-Angara is the largest of three Siberian river systems flowing into the Arctic (the Ob in western Siberia and the Lena in eastern Siberia). Lake Baikal is part of the Angara branch.

The middle section of the Yenisei is controlled by a series of dams that were built by Soviet gulag labor.

Located in northwestern North America, the Yukon River source is located in British Columbia, Canada, flows northward through its namesake territory and then through the U.S. state of Alaska and empting into the Bering Sea at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.

The Yukon River was the major transportation route for gold miners during the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1903)

Zambezi River is the fourth longest river in Africa, its most notable feature is the Victoria Falls between the upper and middle sections of the river.

The river rises in shallow wetlands in north-western Zambia and flows into the Indian Ocean.
