Charles Drew

Charles Drew was a medical researcher in the field of blood transfusions. His techniques of separating and storing blood components, such as blood plasma, were applied to developing large-scale blood banks early in World War II. Dr. Drew also protested the racial segregation of donated blood since blood can be safely transfused from one person to another regardless of ethnicity if the blood types are compatible.

William Harvey

d. 6-3-1657

William Harvey, a physician, described the circulatory system as blood being pumped around the body by the heart before returning to the heart and being re-circulated in a closed system in 1616, and published his work in 1628.

Michael DeBakey was a medical pioneer, innovator, educator and internationally renowned heart surgeon.

Dr. Christiaan Barnard

d. 9-2-2001

Christiaan Barnard was the cardiac surgeon who performed the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant on December 3, 1967 in Cape Town, South Africa. The 54 year old recipient, Louis Washkansky, lived an additional 18 days with the heart of the donor Denise Ann Darvall, who was declared brain dead due to injuries suffered in a car accident.
