Xanadu - only ruins remain of Kublai Khan's summer capital Xanadu, located in what is now Inner Mongolia. It was destroyed by an invading Ming Dynasty army.
A reconstruction project has been undertaken and the site has been proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From Marco Polo's description: “And when you have ridden three days from the city last mentioned, between north-east and north, you come to a city called Chandu, which was built by the Khan now reigning. There is at this place a very fine marble Palace, the rooms of which are all gilt and painted with figures of men and beasts and birds, and with a variety of trees and flowers, all executed with such exquisite art that you regard them with delight and astonishment. ...”

The Shambles, which is an obsolete name for an open air slaughter house and meat market, is an old street with overhanging timber-framed buildings, some dating back to the fourteenth century. Note the lower center area of the street that marks the runnel where the waste animal products would be thrown - by extension any disorderly area is now said to be in “shambles”.

Ys is the mythic city on the France's Brittany coast that was swallowed by the ocean. According to the legend Ys was the most beautiful and impressive city in the world, ruled by King Gradlon.
The Douarnenez Bay (48º10'0"N 4º26'0"W) is the where most versions of the legend take place.
The earliest written version of the story of Ys appears in 1637. Composer Edouard Lalo's opera Le Roi d'Ys (The King of Ys) and Claude Debussy's La cathédrale engloutie, are based on the Breton legend of Ys. |
