The ruins of Nan Madol, the capital of the Saudeleur dynasty until about 1500 AD, lie off the eastern shore of the western Pacific Ocean island of Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia.
Nan Madol's distinctive megalithic architecture using columnar volcanic basalt was probably begun in the 12th or early 13th century. The stone walls enclose nearly 100 artificial islets — stone and coral filled platforms — bordered by tidal canals.
