Goma, a city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is on the northern shore of Lake Kivu in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift system.
Recent history of Goma has been seen the influx of refugees from Rwandan Genocide of 1994, the first and second Congo Wars, and the eruptions of Nyiragongo Volcano which have destroyed 40% of the city.
Lake Kivu is also noted as a threat – a natural phenomenon known as limnic eruption is possible, and likely, due to large amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide and methane held at pressure in th depths of the lake. On August 21, 1986 Lake Nyos in Cameroon emitted a large cloud of CO2, which suffocated 1,700 people and 3,500 livestock in nearby towns and villages.
