Maine, known as the Pine Tree State, is the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi with 90% of the land forested. Maine was broken off from the state of Massachuetts to become the 23rd state, along with Missouri, on March 15, 1820 (remember the Missouri Compromise?).
Maine, renown for its Atlantic coast and forested mountains, is the northernmost and easternmost state. Maine has he destinction of being the only state to border just one other state, New Hampshire to the west. The Atlantic Ocean is to the southeast, the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick are to the northwest and northeast respectively.
A 2001 resolution by the legislature stated that the Maine's name is from the ancient French province of Maine.
