Craters of Laki s a volcanic fissure situated in the south of Iceland and the site of the deadliest volcanic eruption in recorded history.
In 1783-1784 the system erupted for over 8 months with 3.4 cubic miles of basalt lava and poisonous hydrofluoric acid/sulfur-dioxide compounds. It is estimated that 50% of Iceland's livestock perished which lead to a famine and the death of 25% of the population.
Worldwide an estimated six million people died: temperature drops caused crops to failed in Europe, droughts in India, and famine in Japan. Also the Mississippi River froze at New Orleans, and there was ice in the Gulf of Mexico.
