Mount Rainier, an active stratovolcano, is the highest peak in the Cascade Range of the State of Washington. In 1792 Captain George Vancouver, the first European to see the mountain known to Native American tribes as Tacoma, renamed it to honor his friend Rear Admiral Peter Rainier.

Mount Redoubt, a glacier-covered stratovolcano about 170 km SW of Anchorage, Alaska, has had recent activity (early 2009). Redoubt's 1989-90 eruption had severe economic impact on the Cook Inlet region, affecting air traffic far beyond the volcano.
