Bardenas Reales is an arid, steppe-like semi-desert in northern Spain, that has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

There are two distinct regions, called White Bardenas and the Black Bardenas, that contain unusual landforms formed by the the clay, chalk and sandstone being eroded by water and wind. The high plateaus and deep valleys have naturally conserved diverse eco-systems.

There is no human habitation in the reserve though the Bardenas Reales have more than 250 archeological sites from the Bronze and Iron Age, and the Roman period. Currently there is a military zone and winter grazing of sheep in Mediterranean grazing land area.

The vast Chihuahuan Desert stretches from a small area of southeastern Arizona, central and south New Mexico and extreme western Texas into Mexico.

The terrain mainly consists of basins broken by numerous small mountain ranges that create “sky islands” of cooler, wetter, climates within the desert. White Sands National Monument is within the Chihuahuan Desert, as is the site for the first atomic bomb test, Trinity.

Cities in the Chihuahauan Desert are Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, with almost two million inhabitants and the neighboring El Paso, Texas. Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Roswell in New Mexico are among the other significant cities in this ecoregion.

Iran's central plateau is surrounded by mountains and divided into desert drainage basins such as Dasht-e Lut and Dasht-e Kavir

Dasht-e Kavir, also known as Kavir-e Namak or Great Salt Desert, lies in the middle of the Iranian plateau.

Dasht-e Lut is large salt desert in southeastern Iran and is the world's 25th largest desert.

The word “dasht” is Persian for “plain”.
