Cusco (also Cuzco), located in the Andes near Machu Picchu, was the capital and crossroads of the Inca Empire (13th century-1532). Many think the city was planned as an effigy in the shape of a puma, a sacred animal, that symbolizes the political and religious head and heart of the Inca Empire.

Cuzco was declared the historical capital of Peru by the Peruvian Constitution.

Notable people associated with Cusco include Diego de Almagro.

Cuernavaca, located in south central Mexico, was established by the Olmec, “the mother culture” of Mesoamerica, approximately 3200 years ago.

The name “Cuernavaca” is from the Nahuatl phrase “Cuauhnahuac” meaning “surrounded by trees”.

The city, notable for its stable climate and lush vegetation, was the summer home for the Aztec emperors and was nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring” by Alexander von Humboldt.

Cyrene, in present day Libya, was an ancient Greek colony and then a Roman city.

In Greek mythology when Apollo saw the maiden Cyrene wrestling a lion that was attacking her father's sheep, he kidnapped her to North Africa where he founded a city in her name.

The city, nicknamed the “Athens of Africa” was also the seat of the Cyrenaics, a school of philosophy in the 3rd century BC, founded by Aristippus, a disciple of Socrates.

Cyrene was the birthplace of Eratosthenes, and the city is mentioned several times in the Bible.
