Ivan Pavlov was a physician, physiologist and experimental psychologist. Pavlov, awarded the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for research on the digestive system, is best remembered for being the first to describe “classical conditioning” learning that involved the the salivary glands of dogs.

Fritz Perls and his wife Laura Perls developed an existential-experiential psychotherapy they called “Gestalt Therapy”, in the 1940s. The Perls had fled Nazi Germany in 1933, settling in South Africa where they were influenced by statesman Jan Smuts philosopy of holism, the “idea that all the properties of a system as a whole determines in an important way how the parts behave.” Gestalt therapy process enhances awareness of the present situation and personal responsibility.
