John Dee
b. 7-13-1527; London, England
d. 1608/09

Mathematician John Dee was one the most learned men of his time. His interest was drawn to astonomy and navigation (he was friends with Gerardus Mercator), alchemy, astrology, divination and hermetic philosophy. He was a student of Marsillio Ficino.

All Dee's efforts were to learn “the universal language of creation and a pre-apocalytic unity of mankind” and the “transcendent understanding of the divine forms which underlie the visible world”, which he called “pure verities”. He spent 1582-1589 working with a man named Edward Kelley, a self declared spirit medium.

Dee was also an imperialist and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, and amassed a large personal library.

d. 2-11-1650; Stockholm, Sweden (pneumonia)

Mathematician, philosopher and writer René Descartes, known both as the ‘Father of analytical geometry’ and the ‘Father of Modern Philosophy’, and much subsequent Western philosophy is a response to his writings.

FYI ~ At the time of his death he was employed as a tutor for Queen Christina of Sweden.

René Descartes quotes ~
• “I think; therefore I am.”
• “One cannot conceive anything so strange and so implausible that it has not already been said by one philosopher or another.”
• “The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest minds of past centuries.”
• “I am accustomed to sleep and in my dreams to imagine the same things that lunatics imagine when awake.”

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll
b. 1-27-1832; England
d. 1-14-1898

British author, clergyman, mathematician, lecturer and photographer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who used the pen name Lewis Carroll, is best known as a children's author of the fanciful Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872).

The mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson expressing mathematics as Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland ...

“Come, we shall have some fun now!” thought Alice. “I'm glad they've begun asking riddles. – I believe I can guess that,” she added aloud.

“Do you mean that you think you can find out the answer to it?” said the March Hare.

“Exactly so,” said Alice.

“Then you should say what you mean,” the March Hare went on.

“I do,” Alice hastily replied; “at least – at least I mean what I say – that's the same thing, you know.”

“Not the same thing a bit!” said the Hatter. “You might just as well say that ‘I see what I eat’ is the same thing as ‘I eat what I see’!”

“You might just as well say,” added the March Hare, “that ‘I like what I get’ is the same thing as ‘I get what I like’!”

“You might just as well say,” added the Dormouse, who seemed to be talking in his sleep, “that ‘I breathe when I sleep’ is the same thing as ‘I sleep when I breathe’!”

“It IS the same thing with you,” said the Hatter, and here the conversation dropped, and the party sat silent for a minute, while Alice thought over all she could remember about ravens and writing-desks, which wasn't much.
