Granada is situated at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at the confluence of three rivers, in southern Spain.

The Alhambra, a palace, fortress, courtyards and garden complex built by the Moorish rulers during the mid-14th century, is Granada's most famous landmark. The word Alhambra means “the red”, referring to the reddish clay of the area. It is Spain's best known Islamic architecture and a major tourist attraction.

Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city that was once the palace and capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe in southern Africa. It was active between 1100 to 1450 AD during the country’s Late Iron Age and would have housed as many as 18,000 people.

Its most prominent features are the walls, some of which were over five metres high and constructed without mortar. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The word "zimbabwe” likely means “homestead of stone”. In pre colonial Africa there were many zimbabwes, the “great” refers to the size. Today's country of Zimbabwe (formerly known as Rhodesia) takes its name from the ruined city.

Guadalajara is Mexico's second most populous municipality and the 10th largest in Latin America.

Mexico's Guadalajara was founded by a native of the Spanish Guadalajara. The name originates from the Arabic word wadi l-hijara which means “stony river.”

Guangzhou is one of China's five National Central Cities, is located in the Pearl River Delta in the south China.

It is estimated the population of the Pearl River Delta is 40 millilon people.

The city is historically known as Canton.

Guatemala City, is the capital of Guatemala, replacing the old capital of Antigua that was destroyed by the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773. Earthquakes in 1917/18, 1976, and 2010; and the nearby volcano Pacaya, threaten the citizens of Guatemala City.

One of the most notable archeological sites in the Americas, the ancient Mayan city of Kaminaljuyu, has been surrounded by the growth of Guatemala City.

Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest city and center of business and manufacturing industries, is located on the western bank of the Guayas River, where it flows into the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Guayaquil.

The area was inhabited by Native peoples before the Spanish founded a city in 1538. It has been attacked by English and French pirates, ravaged by yellow fever, and in 1822 José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar held a conference there to plan for South America's independence from Spain.

FYI ~ Guayaquil was founded by Francisco de Orelanna, the first to navigate the length of the Amazon (1541-42).

Guernica, a town in the Basque country of Spain, on the coast of the Bay of Biscay.

Guerica (the Basque spelling is Gernika) is best known as the scene of the April 26, 1937 aerial bombing attack commemorated by Pablo Picasso in a painting. It was one of the first aerial bombings by Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe.
