Los Angeles is the most populous city in California and the second most populous in the United States, after New York City.

Nicknamed the City of Angeles and known by its initials, LA, Los Angeles is a global center of business, trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, technology, and education.

Los Angeles was formally founded in 1781 by Los Pobladores, a group of forty-four settlers who came from the common Hispanic culture that had emerged in northern Mexico. They were a racially mixed society, two-thirds being mestizo or mulatto of African, Amerindian, and European ancestry.

Lou-lan was an important oasis city on the Silk Road along the north-eastern edge of the Lop Desert and near the brackish lake known as Lop Nur.

Loulan was rediscovered by Sven Hedin in 1899. His excavations revealed a wooden Kharosthi tablet and many Chinese manuscripts from the Later Han Dynasty (3rd century CE).

Luanda, formerly named São Paulo da Assunção de Loanda, was founded by the Portugese in 1576, on the Atlantic coast of Africa.

Now the capital and largest city of Angola, it was the center of Portugese slave trade to Brazil for nearly 300 years.

With a population of over 5 million, it is also the world's third most populous Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) city, behind only São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, both in Brazil.

Lubeck is one of the major German ports, located on the Trave River and the Baltic Sea.

There is archeological evidence of human settlement in the area since the Neolitic period. Today, Lubeck is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its Brick Gothic architectural heritage.

Luxembourg City is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a landlocked country in western Europe, bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany.

Luxembourg, because of its location and natural geography, has been a place of strategic military significance.

Lyon was founded as a Roman colony in 43 BC at the site of a Gaulist hill fort just to the north of the confluence of the Rhone and Saone rivers, is today the second largest metropolitan area of France (after Paris).

Its location made Lyon an important site for fairs, or temporary markets, which then required the development of financials service in the conversion of monetary systems of traders. Lyon is still known as a financial center and a place where important ideas are shared.

Lyon is noted as the birthplace of two Roman emperors Claudius (10 BC-54 AD, and the first Roman emperor not born in Italy) and Caracalla (188-211), noted for it silk weaving, for labor unrest by weavers, and for the being one of the scenes of mass violence against Huguenots in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacres in 1572.
