Carol Gilligan
b. 11-18-1936; NY

Psychologist and feminist Carol Gilligan, best known for her book, In a Different Voice (1982), studied women's psychology and girls' development.

Carol Gilligan quotes ~
• “The hardest times for me were not when people challenged what I said, but when I felt my voice was not heard.”
• “I've found that if I say what I'm really thinking and feeling, people are more likely to say what they really think and feel. The conversation becomes a real conversation.”

Gestalt Therapy

Paul Goodman
b. 9-9-1911; New York City
d. 8-2-1972; New Hampshire

Sociologist, poet, and writer Paul Goodman was one of the founders of Gestalt Therapy with Fritz and Laura Perls.

Goodman is better remembered as an anarchist and intellectual who as the author of Growing Up Absurd: Problems of Youth in the Organized Society (1960) analyzed the causes and effects of “the disgrace of the Organised System, of semi-monopolies, government, advertisers, etc., and the disaffection of the growing generation”, and in turn was an inspiration to '60s student movement.

Paul Goodman quote ~
• ...“But perhaps there has not been a failure to communicate. Perhaps the social message has been communicated clearly to the young men and is unacceptable.”
• “Wrong training can be a very innocent thing. Consider a father who allows his child to read good books. That child may soon cease to watch television or go to the movies, nor will he eventually read Book-of-the-Month Club selections, because they are ludicrous and dull. As a young man, then, he will effectually be excluded from all of Madison Avenue and Hollywood and most of publishing, because what moves him or what he creates is quite irrelevant to what is going on: it is too fine. His father has brought him up as a dodo.”

Stanislav Grof
b. 7-1-1931; Prague, Czechoslovakia

Clinical psychiatrist Stanislav Grof is noted as one of the founders of the field of transpersonal psychology. He is also a pioneering researcher into the use of non-ordinary states of consciousness for purposes of analyzing, healing, and obtaining growth and insight into the human psyche.

Stanislav Grof quotes ~
• “A radical inner transformation and rise to a new level of consciousness might be the only real hope we have in the current global crisis brought on by the dominance of the Western mechanistic paradigm.”
• “Ancient eschatological texts are actually maps of the inner territories of the psyche that seem to transcend race and culture and originate in the collective unconscious.”
• “Dying before dying has two important consequences: It liberates the individual from the fear of death and influences the actual experience of dying at the time of biological demise.”
• “There is no fundamental difference between the preparation for death and the practice of dying, and spiritual practice leading to enlightenment.”
