The term ‘history’ comes from the Greek historia, “an account of one's inquiries,” and shares that etymology with the English word ‘story’. History is often used as a generic term for information about the past, when used as a field of study, history refers to the recorded past of human societies. The events that occurred prior to human records are known as prehistory.
The terms ‘eon’, ‘era’, ‘period’, ‘epoch’ and ‘age’ refer to chronological measurements by earth scientists like geologists and paleontologist to describe very long stretches of time and relations between events. Historians also use these terms to identify human scaled cultural movements, such as the Age of Enlightenment and La Belle Époque.
