Stephen Crane
b. 11-1-1871; Newark, NJ
d. 6-5-1900; Germany - tuberculosis

Stephen Crane, one of the most prolific and innovative writers of his generation, was a novelist, short story writer, poet and journalist.

Crane began writing at the age of four and was published by the age of 16. He left school in 1891 and began work as a free lance reporter at age 20.

Crane's first novel was from his observations, the 1893 Bowery tale Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, It is a harsh story about a young woman who turns to prostitution and finally commits suicide. This was very controversial and Crane had to pubish the book at his own expense. Critics generally consider the first work of American literary Naturalism.

Crane is best remembered for his 1895 Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without any battle experience. He tells the story of Henry Fleming, a young Union soldier in New York's 304th Regiment, written 30 years after the last battle. Many people considered his second novel, The Red Badge of Courage

Stephen Crane is also known for his short stories such as “The Blue Hotel,” “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky”, and “The Open Boat,” which tells about his experiences in a shipwreck. In addition, he wrote several books of poetry, including War Is Kind (1899).

Toward the end of his life Stepen Crane travelled to Europe to read and recuperate from his failing health. He died in Germany's Black Forest from tuberculosis at age 29.

STEPHEN CRANE QUOTES

• “You cannot choose your battlefield, God does that for you; But you can plant a standard Where a standard never flew.”
• “Every sin is the result of collaboration.”
• “A man feared that he might find an assassin; another that he might find a victim. One was wiser than the other.”
• “He suddenly lost concern for himself, and forgot to look at a menacing fate. He became not a man but a member. He felt that something of which he was a part – a regiment, an army, a cause, or a country – was in crisis. He was welded into a common personality which was dominated by a single desire. For some moments he could flee no more than a little finger can commit a revolution from a hand.”
• “A man said to the universe:
“Sir I exist!”
“However,” replied the universe,
”The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.” War is Kind
