Poas Volcano, in central Costa Rica, has erupted nearly forty times since 1828.

Poas has two crater lakes: upper lake is very acidic with a bottom covered with a layer of liquid sulphur creating damaging acid rain and acid fog. The lower lake is in the Poás Volcano National Park.

Polloquere is a hot springs area in northern Chile, near Arintica and Puquintica volcanoes and salt flats. The Salar de Surire is one of the Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention signed in 1971.

Popocatépetl, “Smoking Mountain”, is the 2nd highest peak in Mexico and linked to the Iztaccihuatl volcano to the north by the high pass used by Cortés (Paso de Cortés) to invade the valley of Mexico in 1519.

The Aztec myth is that the warrior Popocatepetl returned from battle to find his love Iztaccíhuatl had perished from grief believing he had died. The gods covered them with snow, Popocatepetl continues to rage over his loss.

Pululahua (or Pulalagua) is a dormant volcano in the north of Quito, Ecuador. It is part of national Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve.

Hawaii's Puu Oo (poo-oo oh-oh) has been erupting continuously since January 3, 1983. In early 2011 the floor of Puu Oo collapsed, then a new eruption occurred in Kilauea. On March 26, 2011 the crater's floor began refilling.

Chaîne des Puys is a 25 miles long chain of 48 cinder cones, eight lava domes and 15 maars/explosion craters in south central France, part of the Massif Central. The entire region contains the largest concentration of extinct volcanoes in the world.

FYI ~ The name comes from the French word, puy, that means a volcanic mountain with a rounded profile.

The largest cities in the area are Clermont-Ferrand and Saint-Étienne.
