Aime Bonpland was a French army surgeon, explorer, botantist and professor of natural history who collected and classified plants in the Amazon and Orinoco River basins. He was part of a Alexander von Humboldt expedition and imprisoned for ten years in Paraguay as an accused spy. A street in Buenos Aires and a crater on the moon are named for him, as well as many plants and animals.

Mary Breckinridge was a nurse-midwife and the founder of the Frontier Nursing Service, family care centers in the Appalachian mountains. Her grandfather, John C. Breckinridge, was US Vice President under Buchanan; she was a cousin of Sophonisba Breckinridge.

Richard Bright is considered the “father of nephrology”. His research into the causes and symptoms of kidney disease led to his identifying what became known as Bright's disease. The term is used now only in historical significance.

Notable victims of Bright's disease include Robert Sengstacke Abbott, Chester A. Arthur, Madame Blavatsky, Emily Dickinson, Jean Harlow, Alexander Mackenzie, Gregor Mendel, Helena Modjeska, Mozart, Linus Pauling, and Howard Pyle.
