The Gleaners (1857) by Jean-Francois Millet, is a painting about the practice of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields (Leviticus 19:9-10) after they have been mechanically harvested, or where it is not economically profitable to harvest.
The Gleaners would be an excellent image to use in the social studies classroom for past and current events involving labor movements, world history, peace education and Food in Art posters.

FYI - Karl Marx published the Communist Manifesto in 1848; gleaning was punishable by death in the former Soviet Union; contemporary humanitarian groups “glean” from restaurants to feed the poor.

I found this State-by-State list on the USDA site when I did a search for “gleaning”. After researching the organizations listed I could see an updating was needed. I currently don't have time to make a comprehensive effort to verify / update contact info, I decided to to post what was available as a bread crumb (so to speak) for those doing similar research. Please contact me if you have updated information to share.

Listed below is USDA's State-by-State directory of local organizations working on food recovery-related issues, marked by the following affiliation codes:

• USDA's “1-800-GLEAN-IT” toll-free hotline
• SH = “Second Harvest,” the largest charitable hunger relief organization in the country, is a nationwide network of food banks overseeing the distribution of surplus food and grocery products through food pantries, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters.
• WH = “From the Wholesaler to the Hungry,” (may be defunct) a systematic produce recovery programs. National contacts: Susan H. Evans and Peter Clarke (213) 342-2613
• FC = ”Foodchain” (FCA = Foodchain affiliate) appears that Foodchain merged with Second Harvest in 2000.
