Pancho Barnes, a pioneer in aviation, was a member of the Ninety-Nines, raced in the Women's Air Derby, broke Amelia Earhart's air speed record in 1930, was a stunt pilot, and owner of the Happy Bottom Riding Club.

Walter and Olive Ann Beech were a remarkable couple whose careers spanned virtually the entire history of American aviation. Walter was a charming rascal, a hard-living barnstormer. Olive Ann was a shy small-town Kansas girl who hid that shyness behind an imperious manner and a backbone of steel. Together they founded Beech Aircraft Corporation during the Great Depression and guided their company to fame and fortune. (based on book description)

Elly Beinhorn used a small inheritance to take flying lessons. She was particularly interested in long distance flying.

Sophie Blanchard, the widow of French ballooning pioneer Jean-Pierre Blanchard, was the first woman to pilot her own balloon and work as a professional balloonist. She performed all around Europe, even crossing the Alps; she lost consciousness several times on high altitude flights and conducted experiements with parachutes.

FYI - Mme. Blanchard was also the first woman to be killed in an aviation accident when a fireworks display caused her balloon to fail.

d. 3-7-1809; The Hague, from injuries suffered in a fall from a balloon caused by a heart attack.

French ballooning pioneer Jean-Pierre Blanchard made the first crossing of the English Channel in a balloon with Boston physician John Jefferies on 1-7-1785. He also made the first balloon flight in North America in 1793. President George Washington saw the flight, as did future US Presidents Jefferson, Madison and Monroe. His widow, Sophie Blanchard, was also a balloonist.

Louis Bleriot, French inventor and engineer, achieved the first flight over a large body of water, the English Channel, in 1909. The flight was 22 miles and took 40 minutes.

Hélène Boucher was a stunt flyer who was known as the “quickest woman of the world”. She died in a test flight, is buried in Les Invalides, and posthumously made a knight of the Légion d'honneur.

Richard E. Byrd was a pioneering American polar explorer and aviator acclaimed as the first to fly over the North Pole in 1926. This distinction has proven untrue although at the time it permitted Byrd to become internationally recognized and to raise funds for a South Pole flight, which succeeded.

Byrd was also attempting to be the first to solo non-stop across the Atlantic but was beaten by Charles Lindbergh.
