Aviation pioneer Eugene Ely performed the first fixed wing take off (11-14-1910, USS Birmingham, Hampton Roads, VA, landing on beach), and landing (1-18-1911, on a platform on the armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania anchored in San Francisco Bay) on a ship.

The landing was made possible by Hugh Robinson's invention of a “tail-hook” that slows and stops the plane.
