Red, which has the longest wavelength of light discernible to the human eye, is the color of fire and blood. Red is associated with danger, desire, war, love, passion, and temptation.
Because red has very high visibility it is used to signify stop in traffic, and fire equipment is usually painted red.
In a subtractive color system a primary color Red pigment + White pigment produces a tint called Pink; Red mixed with Black pigment results in darker red shades. Red + primary Blue pigment results in secondary Violet; Red + primary Yellow pigment = secondary hue Orange; Red + Green (complimentary colors) = shades of hues from a reddish brown to greenish gray.
The French word for red is “rouge” - Moulin Rouge means “red windmill” the famous nightclub in Paris; Baton Rouge, (the capital of Louisiana) was named by French explorers for the “red stick” they found at that location marking the hunting boundaries of Native American tribes.
The Portugese word for red was given to the area of South America where they found a tree similar to their European source of red dye: brazilwood - Brazil.
“Red” Quotes ~
O my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That’s newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie
That’s sweetly play'd in tune.
Robert Burns
• “In August, the large masses of berries, which, when in flower, had attracted many wild bees, gradually assumed their bright velvety crimson hue, and by their weight again bent down and broke their tender limbs.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

Red barns are iconic for American farms, but why red? Practical farmers first used wood that was naturally resistent to rot to preserve their investment in shelter for their animals and crops. As those trees were in less supply the raw wood was preserved with a trick learned from Native Americans - milk, lime and blood (Indian Red) but that was ‘flaky’, the addition of linseed oil improved adhesion. As chemical pigments became available in the 1800s, red was the least expensive.
