Ljubljana, the capital and largest city of Slovenia, is situated in the Ljubljana Basin on the Ljubljana River between the Alps and the Karst.
The area is prone to flooding, indicated by its Old German name Laibach which means “a standing water causing floods”, a name in use from the Middle Ages till 1918.
Human habitation is indicated in the area from 2000 BC when people lived in pile dwellings in the Ljubljana Marshes.
