Edith Hamilton
b. 8-12-1867; Dresden, Germany (raised in Fort Wayne, IN)
d. 5-31-1963; Washington, DC

Author, historian, and educator Edith Hamilton was “recognized as the greatest woman Classicist”. She was sixty-two years old when The Greek Way, her first book, was published in 1930; and her 1942 Mythology is still a classroom standard introductory text.

Edith Hamilton quotes ~
• “To be able to be caught up into the world of thought – that is educated.”
• “Faith is not belief. Belief is passive. Faith is active.”
• “There are few efforts more conducive to humility than that of the translator trying to communicate an incommunicable beauty. Yet, unless we do try, something unique and never surpassed will cease to exist except in the libraries of a few inquisitive book lovers.”
• “Great art is the expression of a solution of the conflict between the demands of the world without and that within.”
• “When the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.”

Lorraine Hansberry
b. 5-19-1930; Chicago, IL
d. 1-12-1965; New York City

Lorraine Hansberry's best known work, A Raisin in the Sun, was inspired by her family's fight against racially segregated housing laws. She was the youngest person, and only the 5th woman, to receive the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best play of the year; she died at age 35 from cancer.

FYI - the title A Raisin in the Sun is from the poem “A Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes.

Lorraine Hansberry quotes ~
• “A woman who is willing to be herself and pursue her own potential runs not so much the risk of loneliness as the challenge of exposure to more interesting men — and people in general.”
• “I wish to live because life has within it that which is good, that which is beautiful and that which is love. Therefore, since I have known all of these things, I have found them to be reason enough and — I wish to live. Moreover, because this is so, I wish others to live for generations and generations and generations.”
• “Eventually it comes to you: the thing that makes you exceptional, if you are at all, is inevitably that which must also make you lonely.”
• “Never be afraid to sit a while and think.”
