Hugh Thomson was a Victorian era illustrator noted for his pen and ink illustrations of Jane Austen books as well as Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford series. Thomson also did color illustrations of Shakespeare, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Oliver Goldsmith, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and J. M. Barrie's plays.
